Why You Need a Mill-turn in Your Shop
With sophisticated 5-axis machines and other state-of-the-art technologies on the rise, it’s easy to forget what your machining needs are. Maybe you don’t need to splurge on fancy machines. Maybe a mill-turn machine is just what you need…
Mill-turn machines have many general uses but did you know that they can also speed up your manufacturing process? Most machines rotate the part (turning) and mill in two separate operations. Mill-turns expedite part production by doing both operations at the same time with impressive accuracy.
Here’s how it works: mill-turn machining, otherwise known as live tool machining, gives you an extra Y-axis. The trick is knowing when you need a Y-axis versus a C-axis, or 3-axis machine. You’ll want to use the Y-axis when your part requires the machine tool to be pulled from the center and in any case where you want to reduce the number set-ups. The biggest time saver and benefit of using a mill-turn is that you only have one set-up which means higher-quality parts, less time, fewer operators, and faster delivery times. All of that means more money in your pocket!
Mill-turns are a great solution to stay competitive in today’s marketplace, especially when you want to advance without breaking the bank on a fancy 5-axis machine. Many job shops see between a 15-30% improvement in their overall process time. It makes perfect sense when you visualize it: a bar stock on one side and parts that come out of on the other.
Programming made easy: one of the key components to success with a mill-turn is working with your supplier to determine the best programming software. It doesn’t have to be a tough descision and we’re here to help you figure out what is best for your shop’s needs.
